Going Beyond Soil Conservation with the Use of Cover Crops in Mediterranean Sloping Olive Orchards

چکیده

Among the agricultural practices promoted by Common Agricultural Policy to increase soil functions, use of cover crops is a recommended tool improve sustainability Mediterranean woody such as olive orchards. However, there broad range crop typologies in relation its implementation, control and species composition. In that sense, influence different plant on quality indicators orchards remains unknown yet. This study describes effects four treatments based implementation ground covers (CC-GRA: sown with gramineous, CC-MIX: mixture CC-NAT: spontaneous vegetation) conventional tillage (TILL) erosion, physicochemical biological properties after 8 years establishment. Our results demonstrated presence temporary (CC), compared under (TILL), can reduce losses maintain good modify greatly structure diversity bacterial communities functioning. The homogeneous CC gramineous (Lolium rigidum or Lolilum multiflorum) (CC-GR) for increased functional TILL; although most relevant change was modification community composition clearly from rest treatments. On other hand, (CC-MIX) only two did not TILL soil, induced significant changes reverted those level similar an undisturbed had maintained natural vegetation decades (CC-NAT).

A logistic radial basis function regression method for discrimination of cover crops in olive orchards

Olive (Olea europaea L.) is the main perennial Spanish crop. Soil management in olive orchards is mainly based on intensive and tillage operations, which have a great relevancy in terms of negative environmental impacts. Due to this reason, the European Union (EU) only subsidizes cropping systems which require the implementation of conservation agro-environmental techniques such as cover crops ...

Investigating the role of rainwater catchment systems in the development of hazelnut orchards on sloping lands

The development of hazelnut orchards in sloping lands by changing the cultivation pattern and establishing permanent vegetation is of special importance. Considering the potential of lands in the Eshkorat region of Rudsar city and hazelnut adaptation in this region, the use of rainwater catchment systems can play an important role in maintaining the genetic diversity of this product and prevent...

A multi-objective neural network based method for cover crop identification from remote sensed data

One of the objectives of conservation agriculture to reduce soil erosion in olive orchards is to protect the soil with cover crops between rows. Andalusian and European administrations have developed regulations to subsidise the establishment of cover crops between rows in olive orchards. Current methods to follow-up the cover crops systems by administrations consist of sampling and on ground v...

Crop Residues of the Contiguous United States: Balancing Feedstock and Soil Needs With Conservation Tillage, Cover Crops, and Biochar

Crop residues are among the cellulosic feedstocks expected to provide renewable energy. The availability of crop species and residue availability varies across the United States. Estimates of harvestable residues must consider all the residues produced during the entire rotation. Inclusion of fallow or low residue producing crops requires that less feedstock be harvested. A re-occurring theme a...
